Even though a majority of youths and adults watch porn, the activity is still surrounded with shame and secrecy. The porn industry has a rather frayed reputation, and there are many good reasons to be sceptical. But not talking about it won’t do the industry nor the consumers any good.
Porn is a source of pleasure and excitement. How can we learn to consume porn more consciously and at the same time relieve ourselves of guilt and shame?
We need to foster a dialogue around sexuality in the public sphere to fight discrimination and stigma. There is a lack of sexual education. In order to establish a consent culture and nurture a sex positive society, we must talk and inform, ask and ask again.
