Join us for an event with author Petra Hůlová, where she will present her novel All This Belongs to Me – Alt dette tilhører meg, Solum Bokvennen, 2022, translated by Eva Dobos and Harald Strand.
This literary debut, published twenty years earlier in the Czech Republic, earned her several literary awards in her home country, and the English translation by Alex Zucker (2010) won the ALTA National Translation Award. She has since written numerous well received books and together with her regular social commentary Hůlová has established herself as an influential Czech writer.
Alt dette tilhører meg is the first Czech novel translated into Norwegian since 2015. Therefore, the book presentation will be followed by a conversation regarding the state of Czech literature in Norway. Some of the questions we would like to touch upon are: Why have Czech contemporary books been missing from Norwegian bookstores? Why is it important to translate fiction from languages other than English, French and Spanish, and why are there so few publishers who decide to do so? How can we facilitate the education and mentoring of translators and why is this needed in these times of rising AI capabilities?
Opening remarks by the Czech Ambassador to Norway David Červenka.
Guests: Petra Hůlová (Czech writer) and Gunnar R. Totland (publisher for Solum Bokvennen).
Moderator: Vesna Evans (Czech writer living in Norway).
